Typhoon Karding Spared BENECO from Huge Damage

KARDING may be a super typhoon, but it incurred far less damage to BENECO’s infrastructures compared to tropical storm Florita last month.

As of 12 noon today, the estimated partial cost of damage of Karding is P227,077.47, compared to the more than P2 million cost of damage wrought by Florita.

The busted transformer at Pinsao, Baguio City was the biggest expense out of the P227,077.47. Its depreciation and reconstruction cost was P176,358.98. The remaining P51, 618.50 were for primary poles and power lines that were damaged by Karding.

Only two pole replacements remain. A broken pole at Amucao, Sablan discovered at dawn today by a BENECO crew on line patrol, and the leaning pole at the DZWT transmitter site at Lamut, Beckel, La Trinidad.

"It was good that Benguet experienced less rainfall compared to Florita. More rainfall usually cause soil erosion that is usually the cause of damage to our poles and other infrastructure," Engr. Amy Lyn Timpac explained.
